The results of the 2022 election have some concerned.
While it's understandable to have some disappointment if results weren’t what you hoped, the amount of faith for the future placed on getting the ‘right person’ in office, shows a drift in our culture's understanding of certain principles.
People pursuing Liberty do not live as though all hope is in getting ‘the right person’ in office, or in government doing the right thing.
When presented with the opportunity to vote we should research and choose the best candidates, but when we understand the concept of government only being able to pursue very specific enumerated powers and all else is illegitimate, then we should not worry as much as we do about who wins elections.
Opposing legislation or other government action simply from a standpoint of disagreement, gives the notion that citizens can voice support or dissent, but ultimate authority resides in the government. Government doesn't decide the extent of its own authority. They derive their authority from the people by consent through delegation and defining said powers in the constitution.
Regardless of who's in office, ‘blue wave’, ‘red wave’ or purple, if the people would become more familiar with the constitution we wouldn't have to worry as much as we do. While legislation could lean more one particular way, if being checked by the people against the enumerated powers in the constitution we could stop a large amount of the legislation proposed by both sides.
There could be an authorized act by the Constitution yet still not a great idea to pursue. That is when we express our opinion on whether government SHOULD do something. But our first question needs to not be if they should, but instead if they CAN. Do they actually have the legal authority under the Constitution?
For a society to be free, there must be rule of law. Citizens adhere to legitimate and just laws, but the government must adhere to the supreme law.
The Constitution is an inspired framework but it cannot enforce itself. It respects self governance whether for best or for worse, it is up to us to decide and to enforce. This is done through non compliance as well as pushing back by demonstrating a legal overstep from their defined authority, instead of merely expressing dislike towards their action.
Remember, free people have rule of law but don’t ask for permission to be free.
